My father, Clifford Rushton, died this past week, age 90. He had a cerebral hemorrhage on Thursday, October 5th, was moved to hospice on Sunday, October 8th, and died in the late morning on Monday, October 9th. He knew us on the way out and could still shake our hands on Sunday evening, but other than that he was in limited mode.
Above is a photo of my dad in late 1933 with his mother, who was barely 18 at the time. Grandma Lola lived until 2007 and was known as “GG” by my daughters.
Here’s a more recent picture, taken at Prairie Meadows Casino, where my wife and I would meet my mom and dad most Sundays.
My art was already headed in this direction, but because we’re going through everything I’m sure there will be more photos I’ll want to process in this style. These probably won’t get added to the Gallery, but I might share them here.
I had planned to do a promotional mailing in Q4 for the Gallery - but that’s off the table until 2024. Snooze everything for a while.
My dad had a lot of stuff sitting around, mainly in the basement: old mail, books, tools, radios, magazines, clothes, etc. He wasn’t a hoarder, but a lot of things sat in the same place for decades and gathered a bit of dust. You have to go through everything. What looks like “junk mail” may be something else. I didn’t think he had that many eyeglasses, but we’re already starting our second shoebox. I’m sure the Lion’s Club will appreciate the donation.
Everybody asks how we’re doing. I can’t speak for anybody else, but I’m doing OK. I’m intent on getting the basement cleared out as soon as possible. I know where to take recycling, donations, and all that.
A couple weeks ago, I did add some new tote bags to the Mark Rushton Gallery, so here’s a video on some of them:
And I’ve been working on new images for metal prints - now available in more affordable smaller sizes, and on sale for another week:
As far as music is concerned, I have three things scheduled for November 1st, but I won’t have anything scheduled for December 1st. Maybe in January…
No playlists, either, but I’ve been hearing excellent new music by Daniel Diaz, Eivind Aarset + Jan Bang, Halloween music by Nate Trier, and a recent King Tubby dub re-issue. Find them in my 2023 Picks by DJ Rushton playlist at Spotify:
That’s it for this week.
My mom wants to go to the casino today (Sunday, October 15th), so we’re going! Hard to believe it was just two weeks ago we were out there with him.
