Mark Rushton’s Abundant Spare Time is a weekly email on Substack where I talk about my ongoing work as a recording artist and visual artist.
This email is brought to you by the Mark Rushton Gallery, for printed and original artworks. License my music, sound fx, and illustrations at Pond 5 for your creative project. I’m on Bandcamp and all the usual streaming services.

Hello Des Moines! Are You Ready to Chill Out?
This Post is going out on Saturday morning, July 19th. The concert is at 7pm tonight. xBk Annex, 24th & University in Des Moines, right by Drake University. Free!
It’s a small space. Capacity is allegedly 40. There are chairs and couches. They have a little bar for drinks. I’ll have physical media / art giveaways and perhaps some visuals. We’ll see.
I’ll be providing ambient sounds for the space for a couple of hours, at least. Feel free to talk, look at your phones, come and go, say hi, and take a look at my setup. I’ll try to keep the frequencies moving along. I might have a guest later on.
Tilde Elektriske Kretser - Fjærlett
This week, my Fjærlett arrived. I was on the wait list for 5 years.
What is it?
The Fjærlett is an audio feedback instrument made by Kristoffer Gard Osen in Norway. You create feedback through reverb springs and shape that feedback signal with a graphic eq, or you can input / output on the back.
It’s a bit too new to bring to the xBk Annex gig. I haven’t spent much time with it, other than initial unboxing and some playing around. It’s a keeper, though.
Otto Klemperer - Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-Flat Major, K. 495: III. Rondo. Allegro vivace
After the concert, I am taking a few days off from work. I’m not going anywhere. I need to take a break and do next to nothing.
I’ve had rehearsals of my music in the evening. During the day, at work, I thought I’d listen to something completely different.
On Qobuz, the streaming service, I found some Mozart Horn Concertos conducted by the late Otto Klemperer in 1961, featuring Alan Civil on horn. It’s a rondo in allegro vivace, a fast and lively pace.
