On March 1st, I released a bunch of new music and sounds. Part of the pile is A Matter of Time Before It All Goes Away by Aleodeology.
What is Aleodeology?
As a musical entity, it was inspired by the book Primer to Aleodeology: How One Man Identified the Secret to Gravity for Intergalactic Travel by Mark S. Cater.
Cater is an old friend of an old friend who I might have met once about 40 years ago, and who has written and self-published a number of books over the years. Primer to Aleodeology is 56 pages as a 6” x 9” paperback, but the price is $25, so I don’t think he sells many copies, if at all.
At one point, in early 2020, I decided to buy this book because I really liked that name “Aleodeology”, something which appears to be a made-up term - the sort of thing I find quite charming and original.
So how is the book?
For what it is, Primer to Aleodeology is a rather fun read. It’s categorized in “physics”, but of course it’s not. With all due respect, this is more of a “science fiction original”. I don’t read science fiction, but that’s my best guess.
You’re really stepping into somebody else’s world with this one. The writing is “good enough”. I would call this “outsider writing”, kind of like how “outsider art” is.
The book inspired me to release music under the Aleodeology name. At first, Aleodeology was going to be longer ambient tracks that didn’t change much throughout the course of the composition, but that evolved to include short tracks. Kind of like how space travel would seem, I guess. A good example of this is the final track, the lengthy Closed Warehouse:
or Low Level Shuffle:
Aleodeology does relatively well on services like Pandora. It’s fast approaching 500,000 cumulative streams there.
Some of the longer Aleodeology tracks have found use via in-app licensing, and that’s been a good, steady earner for a couple of years.
But on Spotify, Aleodeology has been an almost total dud. I’ve released 13 albums and 8 singles as Aleodeology since 2020, and I’m lucky to get 1500 streams a month on Spotify. I pitch, I playlist, and I promote, but nothing catches the ambient niches.
I’m not complaining. I’m just happy to be here, cranking it out.
There will be likely be a new Aleodeology album in May. And I have at least three other albums edited, titled, and ready-to-go at any time.
